Truth comes from many sources. We must always remember that even liars must base their stories on some sort of truth in order to be believed. Therefore, it is our responsibilty to listen to those that tell us their views of the universe and find the truths in their stories.
Many times, 2 'opposing' will describe the same ideas using different words and claim that the other is wrong. For example, we once heard a Southern Baptist preacher (whom we still admire as one of the best in his denomination) talk about the way Satan was using 'paganism' and 'false religions' to make people beleive in lies like 'Karma'. Then , twenty minutes later, he explained to us that if you do bad things, then 'The Lord' will punish you. Sounds like instant karma to us, but we decided not to force the issue. After all, it was his house.
Morals were used long ago to tell us how we should live, but as societies have evolved and the Catholic and Christian churches have become more and more corrupt and power hungery, people found that they were being lied to about many things. Unfortunately, most people did not try to sort the lies from the truths and came to regard the entire teachings as false. "Morals" were disregarded because there was no if the preacher lied about part of it, he must be a liar, there must be no god, then there is no need for those rules. This was wrong. Although there may not be the god that the Christian religions preach, there is a universal force that these churches were once trying to describe. And these 'morals' can be looked at as 'helpful hints' because of the way the universe works. There are laws that govern us, true laws such as gravity. These laws can be called natural laws because they occur in nature because that is the way nature works. This last sentence can be transcribed to any religion by merely changing the way we lable 'god'. i.e. 'That's the way the Lord made it', 'That is how Allah works', or 'That is how the universe works'. However you explain the existence of these universal laws, they exist and can be proven to support the ideas once commanded as morals. If you kill, you hurt another human, you hurt societym and, when punished, you hurt yourself. If you commit adultery, you stand a chance of catching diseases and ruining your partner (or theirs) physically as well as emotionally. If you cheat or steal, you help no one but yourself, and even then, you may be hurting yourself n the long run. You may say that someone living according to those rules has morals. We say they have common sense.
When the universe was made (or when your choice of gods made the universe, if you prefer) it was set up so that certain actions resulted in certain reactions or consequences, if you will. Have you ever been to church? If so, no matter what church it was, then this was spoken about. Some churches use this idea to frighten people into "being good", saying that you will be sent to hell or reincarnated as a person of a lower caste if you do not follow the correct path.
Karma is often spoken of in eastern religions as the method of reward or punishment for actions in this life, but, like the Christian Hell, the results are not seen until after death. Instant Karma is different in that it occurs in this life, before you die. That is much scarier to me than any possible hell because a possible hell is only 'possible'. Instant Karma is real. I've seen it work too many times. I've felt it work again and again.
I have been on the receiving end of more than a few slaps in the face from the long arm of Karma, instant Karma, or JahKarma as an old friend calls it. Karma can slap you in as many ways as it can reward you. 'Nature' is often used, especially in older, less technologically advanced days (see Noah) but often people around you are used as 'Agents of Karma' or 'Karma Police'. People often wonder how certain assholes have made it so far in life when they are so rude and uncaring towards others. Maybe it is their jobs here on Earth to be assholes and to act as agents of Karma. Certainly the nice guys of the world cannot be the ones to dish out the beat down when needed. How would they be nice guys after that? Even some thugs and thieves are agents of Karma. Again, someone has to the punishing. Some interpretations of the bible say that this is why God made Satan. From stories like the Book of Job, it would certainly seem like this is true.
Job is a unique case, though. He is probably the only person in the Bible that was punished for entertainment instead of punishment. All other instances of Karma (and there are many, from the Garden of Eden, to the Plaugues, to Armegeddon) were due to actual bad choices on the parts of the recipients. Doesn't that make you feel better?
